What actually happens when you eat an apple per day?

I guess apples are one of the most common fruits known in the entire world and we all know the saying โ€œAn apple a day keeps the doctor awayโ€ right? But do we know what really happens when we eat an apple every day?

At the moment there are more than 7000 types of apples known all over the world, different in colour, consistency, powderiness and properties but regardless of its variety and colour, apples are nutritional powerhouses and eating apples has been proven to help with everything from weight loss to heart health.

Apples are a health booster

An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

First of all are a great source of vitamin C. According with Self’s Nutrition Data, a medium apple provides 14% of the recommended daily use of vitamin C, as well as 6% of your recommended potassium.

Apples are also full of flavonoids, naturally occurring chemicals with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Apples are 85% water, and such they are hydrating as well as filling.

And because apples are also a great source of fiber, with 4.4 grams of fiber in every medium-sized fruit, they help to regulate your digestive system, they can also lower cholesterol, help control blood sugar levels, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancers.

Another benefit of eating apples, is that is great for your gut health. A study of Washington State University showed that the non-digestible compounds in apples contribute to the growth of healthy bacteria that helps ward off viruses and other harmful bacteria.

And what if I eat more than one apple a day?

Well, you can do that. Nutritionists suggest to consume 2 to 3 apples per day which won’t add too much sugar and can help cut cholesterol levels by 4% and can also help lose weight.

Craving for more apples?

While it might be safe to eat even more apples, there are also some downsides.

Moderation is the key.

As usual, moderation is the key.

According with LiveStrong eating too much fiber can cause bloating, and despite their low calorie count, too many apples can help you gain some weight.

Maybe an apple a day will not keep the doctor away but seems that daily apple eaters tend to take less medicines, according with JAMA study.

What about the apple juice?

Now, donโ€™t be fooled. Eating 2 to 3 apples per day has lots of benefits but itโ€™s not the same as drinking the apple juice.

It may taste delicious, but apple juice is high in sugar and low in fiber. This not only means missing out on fiber’s benefits for your digestive system, but it means apple juice will leave you feeling hungry sooner than if you ate an apple instead.

Do you want the maximum health benefit from apples?

Then simply donโ€™t peel them! The most fiber and nutrients of the apples are in their skin.

Conclusion?

Eating an apple a day it may not keep the doctor away but it will make your body happy.

Itโ€™s easy to understand why apples have earned their place as one of the most convenient healthy snacks.

  2. Very interesting post. I can confirm that there are thousands of varieties of apples. Many are antique varieties that are not grown for eating out of hand but instead are grown as cider (hard) apples. We used to have over a 100 varieties in our orchard of 300 trees.

  3. I will absolutely eat more apples! I have to admit I prefer them with cheese, my biggest foodie weakness. Brilliant information ๐Ÿ™‚ x

  4. Another food for my brain. Now I should increase the pieces of apple in the shopping list haha ๐Ÿ˜€
I agree with eating the apple skin, but I always peel it because I’m not sure of apples that didn’t grow in my garden or in places I know. I’m worried if it had been spray with chemicals ๐Ÿ™

    1. Yes, thatโ€™s a good point…unfortunately if it was sprayed with chemicals, will not stop only at the skin ๐Ÿคจ
Always better to look for the organic ones but even better the ones from your garden if youโ€™re lucky enough to have one๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ˜‰
