How to get rid of brain fog?

Hello my dear readers,

Lately, I’ve been battling some serious brain fog, and let me tell you—it’s beyond frustrating! So, instead of just staring blankly at my screen wondering where my focus went, I did a little digging to find out what’s causing it and, more importantly, how to clear it naturally.

What is Brain Fog?

Brain fog isn’t a medical condition but rather a symptom of underlying issues. It feels like mental cloudiness, difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, or a lack of mental clarity. You might struggle to find words, feel sluggish, or have trouble focusing—even on simple tasks.

Common Symptoms of Brain Fog:

🧠 Difficulty concentrating or staying focused
😵‍💫 Feeling mentally sluggish or slow
❓ Forgetting things more easily than usual
🗣️ Struggling to find the right words in conversations
💭 Lack of mental clarity, like thinking through a “haze”
😩 Feeling unmotivated or mentally drained

And yes, I have all of these.

What Causes Brain Fog?

1️⃣ Lack of Sleep – Not getting enough rest can slow cognitive function.
2️⃣ Dehydration – Even mild dehydration reduces mental performance.
3️⃣ Stress & Anxiety – Chronic stress increases cortisol, affecting memory and focus.
4️⃣ Nutrient Deficiencies – Low levels of B12, iron, or omega-3s can impact brain function.
5️⃣ Poor Diet – Too much sugar, processed foods, or missing essential nutrients can cause mental fatigue.
6️⃣ Hormonal Imbalances – Changes in hormones (like during PMS, pregnancy, or menopause) can affect brain function.
7️⃣ Sedentary Lifestyle – Lack of movement reduces blood flow to the brain.
8️⃣ Digital Overload – Too much screen time can exhaust your cognitive resources.
9️⃣ Toxins & Inflammation – Processed foods, alcohol, or environmental toxins can contribute to brain fog.
🔟 Medical Conditions – Thyroid disorders, autoimmune diseases, or long COVID can cause prolonged brain fog.

I’d say I live a pretty healthy lifestyle—clean eating, staying hydrated, getting quality sleep, exercising, managing stress, and even taking my supplements like a pro. No medical conditions, no obvious culprits… and yet, here I am, dealing with brain fog.

Turns out, despite ticking all the right boxes, I’ve reached that delightful stage of life where brain fog might just be another lovely perk of perimenopause. Fun, right?

How Perimenopause Can Cause Brain Fog

🧠 Estrogen & Progesterone Fluctuations – Estrogen affects brain function, memory, and mood. As levels drop or fluctuate, it can cause brain fog, forgetfulness, and difficulty concentrating.
🌙 Poor Sleep from Hormonal Shifts – Even if you think you’re sleeping well, progesterone imbalances can lead to lighter, less restorative sleep, impacting mental clarity.
🔥 Increased Cortisol & Stress Sensitivity – As estrogen declines, your body may struggle to regulate cortisol (stress hormone), making you more prone to fatigue and brain fog.
💧 Lower Testosterone Levels – Many don’t realize that women also need testosterone for mental sharpness and energy, and levels decline with age.
🍴 Blood Sugar & Insulin Resistance Changes – Hormonal shifts affect how your body processes glucose, leading to sudden energy crashes and fogginess.

Since I can’t hit the pause button on the natural aging process (if only!), I need to figure out how to shake off this brain fog—because, honestly, some days it’s driving me nuts.

So, I did what any mildly frustrated but determined person would do: research! And voilà, I’ve uncovered some science-backed “effective” ways to clear my mind and feel sharper. (At least, that’s what they claim—let’s see if they deliver!)

🌿 1. Reset Your Brain with Movement

Even if you already exercise, the right type of movement can help clear brain fog fast.
🔹 Go for a Walk in Nature – Fresh air and movement increase oxygen to the brain.
🔹 Stretch or Do Yoga – Helps circulation and stress reduction.
🔹 Try 5-10 Minutes of Cardio – A quick session boosts dopamine and endorphins for focus.

💡 Try this now: Stand up, stretch, and take a few deep breaths. Your brain needs circulation!

💧 2. Hydrate the Right Way

Dehydration is one of the most overlooked causes of brain fog.
✅ Start the morning with a big glass of water + a pinch of sea salt (balances electrolytes).
Drink herbal tea (peppermint, ginseng, or green tea) for an extra mental boost.
✅ If you drink coffee, pair it with water to prevent dehydration crashes.

💡 Try this now: Drink a tall glass of water, and see if you feel even a little better in 15 minutes!

🥑 3. Eat Brain-Boosting Foods

Some foods enhance cognitive function, while others drain your energy.

Eat More of These:

Healthy fats – Avocados, nuts, olive oil, salmon (support brain function).
Protein – Eggs, lean meat, fish (builds neurotransmitters like dopamine).
Dark leafy greens – Spinach, kale, broccoli (reduce inflammation).
Berries – Blueberries, blackberries (rich in antioxidants for brain protection).
Dark chocolate (85%+ cacao) – Increases blood flow to the brain.

💡 Try this now: Have a handful of almonds, walnuts, or dark chocolate for a quick brain boost.

Brain-boosting Foods

🚫 4. Cut Out What’s Slowing You Down

Some things can worsen brain fog even if they seem harmless:
Too much caffeine – Can cause adrenal fatigue and crashes.
Processed carbs & sugars – Cause blood sugar spikes and crashes.
Alcohol – Even a little can impact mental clarity the next day.
Too much screen time – Digital overload overstimulates the brain.

💡 Try this: Take a 1-hour digital detox today and see if your brain feels clearer.

😴 5. Optimize Your Sleep for a Mental Reset

Even if you sleep enough, poor sleep quality can cause brain fog.
Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep.
Go to bed and wake up at the same time daily (regulates circadian rhythm).
Reduce blue light before bed – Avoid screens 1 hour before sleep or use blue-light blocking glasses.
Take magnesium before bed – Magnesium glycinate or citrate can improve deep sleep.

💡 Try this: Set an alarm 1 hour before bed to remind yourself to start winding down.

🧠 6. Train Your Brain for Focus

Sometimes brain fog happens because the brain is under-stimulated or overstimulated.
Do deep breathing exercises (e.g., box breathing – inhale 4 sec, hold 4 sec, exhale 4 sec).
Try meditation or mindfulness – Even 5 minutes can help reset mental clarity.
Read a book or do a puzzle – Engages different areas of the brain.

💡 Try this now: Close your eyes and take 3 deep breaths—breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4, exhale for 6.

☀️ 7. Get Sunlight for a Natural Energy Boost

Your brain needs natural light for proper function.
Get 10-20 minutes of morning sunlight to regulate hormones and improve alertness.
✅ If you can’t get outside, try a light therapy lamp (especially in winter).

💡 Try this now: Step outside for 5 minutes of fresh air and sunlight—your brain will thank you!

🌱 8. Herbal & Natural Remedies for Mental Clarity

If you want a natural brain booster, try:
🍃 Ginseng – Increases energy and focus.
🍃 Rhodiola Rosea – Reduces fatigue and improves mental performance.
🍃 Lion’s Mane Mushroom – Supports brain function and memory.
🍃 Peppermint Tea – Increases alertness naturally.

💡 Try this: Have a cup of peppermint or ginseng tea for an instant lift.

🔄 9. Change Your Routine to Break the Fog

Sometimes, doing the same thing every day can make the brain feel sluggish.
Change your work environment – Try a new café or workspace.
Listen to instrumental music – Classical or lo-fi beats can enhance focus.
Do something fun & unexpected – Your brain thrives on novelty!

💡 Try this: Take a different route on your next walk, or switch up your daily routine.

✨ Final Thoughts: What do I do now?

Just had a handful of nuts and chugged some more water—let’s see if this brain fog gets the memo. Though, to be fair, I do this daily and haven’t exactly experienced a miraculous mental awakening yet.

But hey, I’m determined to test out the rest of these so-called “effective” solutions. I really want my brain back—because, let’s be honest, running on half capacity is getting old!

Brain fog with healthy food elements symbolizing ways to combat it

Have you ever battled brain fog? If so, how did you clear the mental haze? Have you tried any of the tricks I mentioned? Let me know which ones worked best for you—I’m on a mission to get my brain back in top shape! 🚀🧠

    I’ve just skimmed your article

    Rest

    Followed by Self Management

Dividing up your day into segments, factor in regular rest and light work.

Look at your medications and fuel intake, go lightly.

Of course that means less stress…not always easy.

Search online for the Spoon Theory … helps you understand and everyone else.

Hello from Australia! Have SO enjoyed reading your post. Agree with most of it and honestly, truly, sincerely hope your efforts pay off!!!

First – slowly, slowly catchee monkey! Matters cannot and will not change overnight! You have done your homework – now sit back awhile and change what you feel has to be changed in small increments. Go for days without even thinking about what you feel needs to be done!

Slowly change what is needed in your diet, slowly try to get the right amount of sleep, slowly up your mobility levels. Slowly! Or it won’t work – you will make yourself feel worse.

For what it is worth – I would be careful with the herbals, especially ginseng? And I love coffee – black with little or no sugar- it is actually very good for you! Alcohol – well, I am European-born and began having sips of wine when I was about 4 . . . would not dream of giving it up 🙂 !

Why such a long comment. Well, altho’ I did in the end not work as a doctor, I got my MB.BS in 1959 at Sydney Uni and am at the moment following Natural Health courses at a number of US and European universities. Oh, and God giving me life, I shall turn 90 in June 🙂 !!! Must be doing something right . . . you have written most of that down above !!!

I would love to have some days without even thinking about I feel it needs to be done, but is very difficult to control my mind!
I usually drink coffee, espresso black, no sugar, usually at lunch time, and it helps me get through my afternoon ☺️

I do enjoy alcohol too, I don’t exaggerate but every now and then some good wine or cocktails are good 😊 so, no, I wouldn’t give it up either ☺️

      Thank you again!

a few years ago I was diagnosed as prediabetic. I’ve always led a healthy lifestyle & generally felt good. little did I know that testing my blood sugar to see what affects it would lead me to feel better than ever, including no more brain fog!

    1. popsiclesociety Avatar

Most of the time keeping an eye on our health and doing the check-ups really helps improving our lifestyle. Glad to hear that even the brain fog is gone 🙂

Hi Ribana! Sorry to hear of your brain fog problems, I have had brain fog since getting Covid back in 2020 though my doctor doesn’t think it could be related since it has been so long. I think it’s related though. Anyway, it is no fun at all and has really interfered with my blogging since it is so hard to concentrate. Reading is very hard to do now and I love reading! Losing my train of thought in a conversation is frustrating too, plus thinking of that one “word” that I know but can’t recall when I want to. I am going to try some of these tips, some I already do but haven’t noticed any difference, even after 3 months. I would like to get back to blogging regularly again, that is something I really miss. I sure hope some of these things will help you Ribana! Have a wonderful day! 😊😻🌞
