Hello February

Oh wow, it’s February already? Did January sneak out the back door while I wasn’t looking?

Hello my dear readers,

January zoomed by, and I think I’ve cracked the mystery—it’s because I kicked off the year with a bit of traveling, and time seems to fly when you’re on the move!

My first adventure of the year took me to Bangkok, where we were greeted by a surprisingly chilly January. With temperatures hovering around 20-22°C and a brisk breeze, it was much cooler than I expected. “Cold” in Bangkok? Who would’ve thought! But honestly, it was a refreshing change and quite enjoyable.

Next stop on our journey was Hong Kong, where things got even chillier with temperatures dipping to 12-14°C. This time, though, I was ready for it—no surprises here! It might have been cold, but it only added to the charm of exploring this vibrant city.

Back in Phuket, where the temperature is a warm and breezy 29-30 degrees Celsius, things are starting to feel “back to normal.” The Christmas and New Year rush has subsided, and the calm sea and gentle breeze have returned. However, one unfortunate reality of overtourism here is the overwhelming waste problem. Despite being a popular tourist destination for years, Phuket still struggles to handle the sheer volume of visitors, and the resulting pollution is heartbreaking.

To paint you a picture: the wastewater, unfortunately, flows directly into the sea, turning it pitch black in some areas. And the smell? You don’t even want to imagine it. Add to that the piles of plastic and paper litter scattered everywhere, and it’s a grim reminder of the damage caused by—surprise, surprise—us humans. It’s devastating to see such a beautiful place burdened by something so preventable.

But most of the time, we choose to focus on the beauty that surrounds us—the serene blue sea, calm and inviting, and two good friends enjoying a peaceful morning by the shore. It’s these moments of tranquility and connection that remind us of why this place is so special, despite its challenges.

Wishing you a February filled with love, joy, and beautiful moments! 🌸✨

I think people seek the sea for holidays especially if the live inland in say a city of many. This thought that the breeze, the water restore us. Never imagining that the garbage is not taken care off in quite the way their home city has the facilities to deal with it.

    Yep February is here 😀

True! People seek the sea for holidays, I just wish they could be more considerate and not destroy it though!
      Have a lovely February!

We would happily settle for those temperatures. More good photographs, even of the dreadful water pollution.

I know, the temperatures even if lower than normal in this region, are still better than winter temperatures in Europe 🥶😉
      Thank you very much Derrick!

It blows my mind that people don’t respect such a beautiful place. They are self centered

      Unfortunately yes! Very sad!

Hi, what an adventure, I’m dying to hear more about Hong Kong and your short experience in China. Maybe not so short, I can’t really tell from your concise description

We only stayed a few days in Hong Kong this time but we travel there a few times per year! It’s always great to be back in Hong Kong! It’s such a vibrant city that never sleeps 😉

We have to check it out yet, what time of year is best to go there?

      2. popsiclesociety Avatar

Hong Kong is a year-round destination but I would suggest to avoid March to May as is really humid. I like it most from September to November when is temperate and dry.

Wonderful photos Ribana! Those temperatures would feel like summer to us right now. Actually, our summer temperatures are much like that normally. This morning it was -36C here, a bit on the cool side for me, so I stayed indoors. Have a great week Ribana!😊😺❄️

Thank you Steve for stopping by, very appreciated! I know that you have a very cold weather but is also beautiful because you have a lot of snow ❄️ ! At -36C I wouldn’t even get out 🥶 That’s really freezing 🥶 Stay warm you two! 😻☕️🍵

It was a bit warmer today at -34C but there was no wind and the sun was shining so it felt quite nice out there. I wouldn’t want to stay outside too long though.🥶🙄🙀❄️

A sunny day in winter is beautiful but as you said, just for a while! -34C is super cold 🥶 ☺️

Walking on the beaches on a summer evening, you see so much rubbish, so sad.

    1. popsiclesociety Avatar

Yes, very sad! I will never understand why people can be so unconsidered! What it cost them to keep their rubbish and dispose it properly?

Back to normal. It’s starting to snow, again.

    1. popsiclesociety Avatar

It’s beautiful when is snowing! Better snow than rain in winter ❄️ 😆

I actually prefer rain. It’s getting cold again.
