Ingredients:

Makes 4 medium bagels

  • 125 g / ½ cup Greek Yogurt
  • 120 g / 1 cup Self-Raising Flour (Alternatively, combine plain flour with a teaspoon of baking powder and a pinch of salt for a homemade version)
  • Egg Wash, for brushing (optional)
  • Sesame Seeds (optional)

Instructions:

1. Oven Preparation: Kickstart your bagel adventure by preheating the oven to 190°C (375°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to ensure your bagels glide off the tray effortlessly after baking.

2. Dough Creation: In a mixing bowl, combine the Greek yogurt with self-raising flour. If you’re opting for plain flour, don’t forget to whisk in the baking powder and a pinch of salt. Stir until the components come together in harmony, forming a dough. If the dough feels more like a sticky situation than a smooth operator, sprinkle a tad more flour into the mix.

3. Kneading and Shaping: Flour your work surface and place your dough onto it, engaging in a brief kneading session until the dough is silky and compliant. Divide this doughy treasure into four equal parts, rolling each into a friendly ball. Now, for the magical transformation – press your thumb through the center of each ball to forge the iconic bagel void, stretching it slightly to achieve the perfect bagel silhouette.

4. Finishing Touches: Position your soon-to-be bagels on the prepared sheet. For those who revel in a glossy finish, a gentle brush with egg wash will do the trick, and a sprinkle of sesame seeds will add a crunchy texture and a nutty taste.

5. Baking: Slide the tray into the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until your bagels are golden and singing with warmth. Patience is key – allow them to cool on a wire rack before diving in.

I want to try making these! I love how they are easy to make with simple ingredients. I love bagels but don’t like the high caloric ones the grocery stores sell.

I’m making the bagels today! I think I may have sent the temp too low because the recipe I followed said to bake at 350°F for 20-24 min and they weren’t golden on the top at all. For my second batch I’m going to bake them based on your instructions and see how they turn out. I’m making 2 batches today and will be making homemade bagels for now on. 🥯😋

    2. popsiclesociety Avatar

That’s what I love about them too! Simple ingredients, easy and fast to do 😉 Try them! You’ll love them 😉

They are delicious! 😋 I already made 3 batches of 4 bagels per batch. 1 container of Greek yogurt yielded 12 bagels. My husband wants me to make more bagels so I need to go grocery shopping. 😅

      2. popsiclesociety Avatar

That’s wonderful ☺️ 😋 And the good thing is that you can eat them as they are, or add something savory or sweet…so many combinations 😋😉

      3. Hilary Tan Avatar

It’s funny because my husband came home with Greek yogurt this morning. He wanted me to make the bagels again so I made a batch of 4 sesame seed bagels. I found the sweet spot for baking them: Bake for 22-24min at 360°F.

I experimented with different temps and this temp seems to work the best for my oven. 😊 I want to make cinnamon raisin bagels one of these days. I also plan on getting an everything bagel seasoning if the grocery store has it.

      4. popsiclesociety Avatar

Oh wow! Wonderful! That’s the beauty of these bagels, that you can enjoy them in so many ways! I wanted to use bagel seasoning too but couldn’t find it here! Have fun making them and enjoying them 😉

They look delicious! With living at 9,000 feet I have pretty much given up baking after too many flops even with high altitude instructions!

    1. popsiclesociety Avatar

Thank you! Oh wow, what instructions you need to follow to cook at such a high altitude?

      1. denisebushphoto Avatar

Baking mixes have you add more water or some flower. That might work at moderate high elevations but it often doesn’t work at 9,000 feet. I haven’t learned a great solution. Water boils at a lower temp so pasta and other things take longer.

      2. popsiclesociety Avatar

I guess just by experimenting with different quantities or temperatures you can get a hand at it 😅

Do you plan on doing my Earth Day Challenge by any chance?

      7. popsiclesociety Avatar

Fantastic initiative! Unfortunately, I might not be able to join since I’m in the middle of a relocation. But truly, we should honor Earth Day daily by looking after our planet and not littering. It’s important to be mindful and considerate every day.
