5 eating rules for a longer life

For the ones that are familiar with my blog is not a secret that I want to live forever.

Well yes, I don’t hide it! I’m too curious of what will happen with this world in the future to give up so easily.

Eating, as you know, is one of the most important factors that affect our life.

And I’m not talking about dieting as I’m almost 40 and I’ve never did a diet in my life but my exams are always good and my body is keeping up with me, I can’t complain.

But let’s see if we can take some examples from the people who live in the Blue Zones, the five areas in the world that have the longest-living and healthiest populations, which are:

  • Okinawa – Japan
  • Sardinia – Italy
  • Nicoya – Costa Rica
  • Ikaria – Greece
  • Loma Linda – California

It has been found that these Blue Zones, despite being in completely different geographical locations and cultures, have things in common.

And surprise, surprise the way they eat is one of them.

Now let’s see 5 things they have in common:

1. Drinking wine

Seems there is evidence that drinking a couple of glasses of wine a day, with a good meal and friends if possible, reduces mortality.

Now this is something that I can do easily 😉

Some potential reasons for this are that wine is rich in antioxidants,  has some anti-inflammatory properties, and has been linked with a reduced risk of heart disease.

Of course, remember that wine too need to be in moderation though…you don’t want to go on the other side 🤪

2. They eat meat in moderation and lots of veggies

While meat is a great source of protein, B vitamins, and bioavailable iron, too much of it is also associated with cardiovascular disease, colorectal cancer, and other health issues.

Meat is good but don’t exaggerate!

And don’t forget the veggies which are good for your heart, gut, brain and for the entire body.

3. And yay, plenty of carbs

We are all carbs lovers, and are very good for our health.

But when I say carbs I’m not referring to pasta, rice or bread, I’m referring to grains, greens, tubers, nuts, and beans.

Yes, pasta, rice or bread are good too but as always in moderation.

The longevity star food is beans! It seems that eating about a cup of beans a day, it’s probably worth an extra four years of the life expectancy according with Buettner, a journalist and expert on Blue Zones.

4. Sugary beverages are out of question

The people living in the Blue Zones are sticking with plenty of water during the day, coffee in the morning and wine in the evening.

5. Intermittent fasting

Meaning they tend to eat all their calories in an eight hour window, leaving 16 hours for their digestive systems to rest.

Honestly I’ve started with intermittent fasting too and I must admit it makes me feel good. Occasionally I simply skip the breakfast, and overall I don’t have that feeling of overloaded with food.

In the end, my rule for a longer life is very simple:

Eat a little bit of everything and enjoy life!

  7. Such an interesting post. I can try to eat more beans, I think, but absolutely cannot do the fasting. I get very cranky if my tummy is empty and I just love breakfast and lunch and dinner 🙂

    1. Thank you very much! Is difficult until you get used to it but then becomes normal 😉 However I don’t do it everyday just because I love breakfast too, and lunch and dinner 🤪😉😋
