My Literary Journey Continues – Books #9 of 2024

I love diving into fiction—novels, science fiction, fantasy, mystery, and romance are my go-to genres. But every now and then, I mix things up with some non-fiction, like biographies or history.

My book # 9 was Prisoners of Geography – Tim Marshall

Prisoners of Geography – Tim Marshall
Genre:Non-Fiction, Geopolitics
Author:Tim Marshall
Originally Published:2015
Print Length:320 pages

Book Summary:

In this bestselling book, an acclaimed journalist explores the geopolitical strategies of world powers through ten key maps, revealing how geography shapes global politics. Maps offer insight not just into locations but also into the underlying forces that influence nations’ strengths, vulnerabilities, and decisions. By examining regions like Russia, China, the US, and the Middle East, the book provides a fresh perspective on why global leaders act as they do. This work is praised for its insightful approach to understanding geopolitics in a complex world.

My Review:

I’m not typically into politics, but I do like to stay informed about global events. This book is a fantastic read for understanding the underlying reasons behind world conflicts, geopolitics, and grand strategies. It’s well-written and offers a solid foundation for grasping why the world is the way it is today. Although some details are a bit dated (particularly concerning Russia), most of the content remains relevant. The chapters on Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa are especially insightful. The inclusion of maps enhances the reading experience, making it easier to connect the dots. I recommend reading this book in its physical form so you can easily reference the maps.

Highlights:

  • Effective use of maps to support key points.
  • Accessible for general readers, yet informative for those with more background knowledge.
  • Relevant to understanding current global events.
  • A great starting point for exploring the role of geography in international politics.

If you’re curious about international politics, Prisoners of Geography is a must-read that will deepen your understanding of how geography shapes our world.

I only had time to read this book during my flights, so it took me a bit longer than usual. Even though it’s not my typical choice, I’m really glad I picked it up. It gave me a much clearer understanding of how geography influences global events!

Not sure what I’ll pick up next! Let’s see where the reading journey takes me! 📚

Happy Readings!

    Hi Rabina,
Long time and hope you are well.
This book ‘jumps out’ at me presently.
My primary schooldays in a village school were 1960-1966 (Lancashire County Council).
After passing my eleven plus examination I gained a scholarship to an all girls convent grammar school in Wigan, a town 8 miles away in a different borough.
I was the only one in my class to pass the exam.
Somehow I always felt unworthy and guilty at leaving my classmates behind to ‘venture out’.
I remain in contact with friends from both schools.
Geography, which is what I am supposed to be talking about!, didn’t favour much as a subject in either schools.
Coincidentally I have had recent discussions with friends (including a ex geography teacher) regarding the lack of a classroom globe, let alone an atlas in each school.
When I first went to Gambia, West Africa in January 2012 I researched exactly where it was, of course thinking Africa was one country.
My enquiring mind has further deepened my knowledge.
This book certainly appeals to me.
    Thanks Rabina for sharing 😊

Hi Margaret, It’s lovely to hear from you, and I hope you’re doing well too! What an incredible story—I can imagine the mixed feelings you must have had when you passed your exam and left your classmates behind. It’s so special that you’ve stayed in touch with friends from both schools!

It’s amazing how our understanding of the world evolves over time. I’m so glad the book resonated with you, and I think you’ll find it really insightful.

Thank you for sharing your story with me 😊

      Take care!

        Ah Rabina,
You have solved a mystery for me! Maybe for a seperate post.
Text message from library yesterday to say my book has arrived. Checked online to discover which book it was and saw it was yours but couldn’t remember my source.
That much going on here I don’t know where I am up to a lot of the time.
I was just debating whether or not to go into town for an item I need and now I am prioritising the library!😉
        Will keep you posted 😊👍

From the middle east I can tell you 1000 stories 😅 thank you for recommending, seems interesting but as a person that lived many conflicts, I feel I had enough of this and all I want now is just a peaceful life. I hope you are good 😊🧸🤗

I know how incredibly strong you are dear Koko—living in a place where being strong isn’t just a choice, but a necessity! I completely understand your desire for peace now after experiencing so much conflict. And I hope the day will come!

It’s important to prioritize what brings you calm and balance. I truly hope you find all the peace you’re seeking. I’m doing well (a busy bee 😊) , thank you, and I hope you are too. 😊🧸🤗🧸🤗

Geography must have a lot to do with the interaction between countries and cultures. Man’s insecurities and insatiable quest for power and wealth is a big part of it too.

    1. popsiclesociety Avatar

You’re absolutely right! Geography plays such a crucial role in shaping the interactions between countries and cultures—borders, resources, and landscapes often dictate the dynamics of power and relationships. And as you mentioned, human nature, with its insecurities and relentless pursuit of power and wealth, often complicates these interactions even further. It’s fascinating, yet also a bit sobering, to see how much of history and current events are influenced by these forces. Thank you for sharing your thoughts—it’s a deep topic to reflect on!
