Mosquitoes in Phuket: My New Uninvited Daily Companions (My first peeve in Phuket)

Just shy of hitting the three-week mark in Phuket, and I’ve already picked up a buzzing peeve—mosquitoes!

Patio Perks and Pesky Perils

One of the major selling points of our new digs was the patio. I had grand visions of typing away on my laptop in the gentle breeze, sipping cocktails, and enjoying alfresco dinners as the sun set. Ah, the dream!

But here’s a plot twist I hadn’t anticipated: mosquitoes. These uninvited guests clearly didn’t get the memo about personal space. On our very first day, I eagerly set up my outdoor office, only to end the day as an all-you-can-eat buffet for the local mosquito population—over 20 bites and counting!

Since then, my idyllic patio has doubled as a battlefield. The war against these winged warriors is on, and let me tell you, it’s a buzzkill!

War against mosquitos

My love for patio office days has me gearing up like I’m heading into battle every morning. First order of business? A generous spritz of mosquito repellent, as if I’m prepping for a perfume ad.

Mosquito Repellents

I’ve armed every corner of the patio with electric zappers and repellents, turning it into a no-fly zone.

Despite my best efforts, these persistent little vampires still manage to sneak in a nibble or two.

Indoor Oasis: No Bugs Allowed

Inside the house, it’s a different story—I’m running a tight ship, or should I say, a tight no-fly zone. I’ve equipped every nook and cranny with an arsenal of electric and gel repellents. The result? A fortress so fortified that even the craftiest of mosquitoes think twice before crossing the threshold. So, while the outdoors may be a battleground, indoors is my bug-free sanctuary. Here, the only buzzing is from the excitement of a peaceful evening!

Here’s to hoping I’ll eventually find a way to broker a peace treaty with the local mosquito community!

Remember mosquitos can carry Dengue Fever among other diaereses. You’ll need to spray yourself as well, that sucks but you don’t want the nasty things they carry. They can even carry Lyme and other Tick Borne Diaereses. There’s always a small price to pay, even in paradise isn’t there? Take good care. I can’t until you have time to share some photos of the ocean and the beauty of the island. Take good care.

Yes, they are very nasty…Hopefully during dry season will be less 😅 I’ll try my best to share some photos soon 😄 Take care too!

I find them to be irritating. From what I’ve heard and read, Mosquitoes in Thailand, just like anywhere else, can be picky when it comes to their dinner preferences – as they have a keen sense of smell, they are attracted to lactic acid, uric acid, and ammonia present in our sweat. They also prefer people with blood type O. I hope your first weeks in Thailand are going well 🙂 Aiva xx

Yes, my husband has blood type O and they love him…but unfortunately they love me too 😬 I’m travelling this period so can’t enjoy Thailand for the moment 🤪

Oh no! Can you have a screened in area? Although that ruins the whole point of sitting outside.

    1. popsiclesociety Avatar

Unfortunately no, but hopefully in the dry season will be less of them 😅

Blah. Way to ruin a lovely dream. They can be so awful. Hope you find a way to get rid of them and take back the patio.
