The 5-Minute Switcheroo: From ‘Work Mode’ to ‘Relax Mode’

Ever finished the day and felt like your brain was still buzzing with the endless hum of office chatter, emails, and deadlines? It’s like your mind’s stuck in “work mode” with the “off” button mysteriously hidden. But what if you could flip that switch in just 5 minutes, transforming into relaxation royalty without needing a crown or a scepter? Well, grab a comfy seat (and maybe a snack), because here’s your no-fuss guide to chilling out after a long work day.

Step 1: Signal the Brain (1 Minute)

First up, send a clear signal to your brain that work is over. How? By creating an end-of-day ritual. This could be as simple as shutting down your computer and saying out loud, “Work’s done, fun’s begun!” It sounds silly, but it’s about creating a cue that tells your brain to shift gears. Even a small action can be like flicking a switch inside your head.

Step 2: Breathe Like You Mean It (1 Minute)

Next, let’s do some “power-down breathing.” Sit in your newly proclaimed throne (a.k.a. your favorite chair), close your eyes, and take deep, slow breaths. Breathe in through your nose for a count of four, hold it for a count of four, and exhale through your mouth for a count of six. Imagine exhaling all the day’s stress and tension. This isn’t just hot air; deep breathing helps reduce stress and tells your nervous system to chill.

Step 3: Get Physical, Just a Little (1 Minute)

Stand up and stretch it out. Reach for the ceiling, touch your toes, roll your shoulders. This isn’t a workout session, just a minute to get your blood flowing and shake off the day’s rust. It’s like telling your body, “Hey, we’re not at the desk anymore!”

Step 4: Change Your Scene (1 Minute)

Walk away from your workspace. Whether it’s stepping into a different room, or even just turning your chair away from the desk, changing your environment can help reset your mental state. If you can, get a glimpse of nature, even if it’s just a houseplant named Fred. Nature is like a natural reset button for your brain.

Step 5: Engage Your Senses (1 Minute)

For the final minute, do something that engages your senses in a non-work way. Sip some aromatic tea, play a piece of music that you love, or light a scented candle. This sensory input firmly plants you in the now, helping your mind migrate from “to-do list” land to “me-time” paradise.

And there you have it! In just 5 minutes, you can tell your brain that the workday is over and it’s time to relax and recharge. With this quick routine, flipping the switch from ‘Work Mode’ to ‘Relax Mode’ doesn’t require tech support. Just a little mindfulness, movement, and maybe some music or minty freshness (if you opted for the tea). Give it a try and watch your post-work evenings unfold with a bit more peace and a lot less work stress!

I used to divide the two by never, ever working from home which I know is not so easy these days. As I walked out of the office a mental shutter came down and I was immediately in “Off” mode.

That’s great! I guess with working from home is more difficult but definitely not impossible!

Fantastic post, Ribana. Many people find it difficult to switch off and relax after work – but it’s so important to try. Self-care is vital and everyone deserves a decent break at the end of the day or their shift. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Thank you very much Aiva! Very true, it is difficult to switch off but is a must for our wellbeing 😉
Wish you a lovely day too! 🌷

Great advice Ribana! I used to have my office at home for years and quickly discovered that I needed to keep that office space divided from my living space, even with just temporary walls of some kind. Then at the end of the day I walked out of there and left it behind until the next day. But I did not spend much time in my office really since my work was away from home, but I had to start and end each day in the office.😊😺

That’s a good way to separate the work from the personal life in a way 😀…at least mentally I guess is easier if you have some kind of “barriers” 😀

I found it easier for me to do it that way.😊
