Recently, I have not been able to read as much as I would like to due to my work commitments. Additionally, after living in Singapore for over 11 years, my husband and I have decided to move on and explore other parts of the world. Therefore, in my limited free time between jobs, I am also busy preparing for the relocation.
We will still remain in Asia, we will just change country, so Thailand, here we come.
But for now, returning to the topic of reading, I was able to finish another book this year – House of Flame and Shadow, which is the third book in the Crescent City series written by Sarah J. Maas. If you are a fan of young adult fantasy books, you are already familiar with Sarah J. Maas and her amazing works, and in that case, you must read this series!

Book Summary:
In the enthralling continuation of Sarah J. Maas’s Crescent City saga, the narrative picks up momentum in its third installment, setting new benchmarks in the realms of romance and adventure. This series, which commenced with the critically acclaimed “House of Earth and Blood” and continued with “House of Sky and Breath,” captivates its audience once more.
Bryce Quinlan finds herself unexpectedly navigating an alien realm far from Midgard, the place she calls home. Surrounded by the unfamiliar, her sole desire is to return to the comforts of her loved ones, her circle of friends, and her partner. Cast adrift in an uncharted territory, Bryce must rely on her sharp intellect to find her way back, a journey made complicated by the uncertainty of whom to trust.
Meanwhile, Hunt Athalar is ensnared in yet another precarious situation, possibly the most challenging he has ever faced. Having tasted a brief period of contentment and having everything he cherished within reach, he now finds himself confined once again in the Asteri’s grim dungeons, deprived of his liberty and ignorant of Bryce’s circumstances. Eager to assist her, Hunt is rendered helpless until he can break free from the clutches of the Asteri.
As the narrative unfolds, the third book in the Crescent City series elevates the story to thrilling new levels, with Bryce and Hunt at the epicenter of a burgeoning crisis that threatens their world. The future hangs in the balance, dependent on their actions in this riveting sequel.
My Review:
As with numerous other enthusiasts, I hold Sarah J. Maas in high regard as one of my top cherished writers for several compelling reasons. The narrative structures she crafts in her series captivate me, especially the unexpected directions and plot developments she introduces. She stands out as one of the rare storytellers who consistently manage to catch me off guard with her inventive plot twists, a quality I deeply enjoy. Her leading female characters embody the essence of what heroines should be, showcasing strength and intelligence. Maas skillfully incorporates multiple strong female leads in her stories, setting a standard for character diversity. Moreover, I’m particularly fond of the cleverness and wit her heroines possess, always equipped with a strategic move or a sharp retort.

My favorite aspect of this book is undoubtedly the intersection with ACOTAR (A Court of Thorns and Roses), which felt like a gift in itself. Immense gratitude to Sarah J. Maas for that delightful surprise that brought us all an extra sprinkle of happiness. Despite anticipating this crossover, I consciously chose not to dwell on it following HOSAB (House of Sky and Breath), the second installment in the Crescent City series, due to the inevitable wait for the subsequent book. I didn’t want to heighten my anticipation knowing the delay before it would be available. While I would have cherished more moments with Rhysand and perhaps an appearance by Feyre, I acknowledge that we can’t have everything we wish for, yet the book still captured my heart. I’m eagerly anticipating how these elements will weave into the upcoming ACOTAR novel!
From beginning to end, this series captivated me. The narrative reached its climax in this third book, tying together all the threads introduced in the first book “House of Earth and Blood.” I strongly suggest delving into Sarah’s “A Court of Thorns and Roses” series prior to this one, as it sets the stage with numerous interlinking elements that might be challenging to grasp without prior knowledge.

This series stood out with its heightened levels of action and suspense compared to her previous works. I found myself thoroughly engrossed, unable to set the book aside from the moment I began until the very end.

House of Earth and Blood, the first book from Crescent City Series by Sarah J. Maas

Book Summary:
Bound by familial ties, lured by longing, and freed by fate, Bryce Quinlan cherishes her existence. Each evening brings a new celebration, and Bryce intends to indulge in every delight that Lunathion, also known as Crescent City, presents. However, a vicious homicide disrupts the city’s core, shattering Bryce’s world.
Two years on, Bryce still frequents the city’s most infamous clubs, now in pursuit of forgetfulness. The resurgence of the murderer compels her to confront the past. The assignment of the notorious Fallen angel, Hunt Athalar, to monitor her movements signals that the time for evasion is over.
Together, Bryce and Hunt delve into the enigma and their entwined histories. Their investigation sends shockwaves through the city’s shadows, across contentious lands, and into the depths of Hel, awakening ancient forces.
This narrative, ideal for aficionados of Jessica Jones and True Blood, presents a grand modern fantasy in a fractured realm, where a woman’s quest for truth is also a quest for vengeance.
With its compelling characters and suspenseful twists, Sarah J. Maas’s latest fantasy series, heralded by her status as a #1 New York Times bestselling author, explores the anguish of loss, the cost of liberty, and the strength of love.

Reluctantly swept into a rebellion they never sought to join, Bryce, Hunt, and their allies confront the daunting Asteri, entities they dare not attract attention from. As they delve deeper into the cause of the rebels, they’re faced with a dilemma: remain passive in the face of injustice, or stand up and fight. Silence has never been their strong suit.
