The shoes left along the river in Budapest are a deeply moving and significant memorial. Located on the banks of the Danube River, near the Hungarian Parliament building, this memorial consists of 60 pairs of cast-iron shoes. These shoes represent the tragic fate of the Jews who were killed there during the Second World War. The victims, before being shot and their bodies thrown into the freezing Danube, were ordered by the murderers to remove their shoes. The memorial symbolizes the final cruel acts inflicted upon these victims by the Arrow Cross militiamen, a pro-Nazi party in Hungary during the war.

This somber site serves as a poignant reminder of the atrocities committed and the lives lost during this dark chapter in history. The array of shoes includes various types, such as women’s, men’s, and children’s shoes, representing the diversity of the victims. These shoes, pointed towards the river, not only commemorate the hundreds who lost their lives but also serve as a lasting tribute to honor their memory.

Even without knowing about the memorial I could feel the intense pain and loss. I had to google it and wasn’t surprised by the story. Thanks for sharing it – and thanks for the follow as well.

I am curious to know the why of the shoes. And whose? And where from have they arrived. Feels like people have traveled a lot. Intriguing picture.
