How do you like your green peas?

Did you know that in the mid-19th century, Austrian monk Gregor Mendel’s observations of pea pods led to the principles of Mendelian genetics, the foundation of modern genetics? He ended up growing and examining about 28,000 pea plants in the course of his experiments. Mendel chose peas for his experiments because he could grow them easily, develop pure-bred strains, protect them from cross-pollination, and control their pollination.

On the other side, these little balls have been part of the human diet for hundreds of years and are consumed all over the world. Green peas are also quite nutritious and contain a fair amount of fiber and antioxidants. Their calorie content is fairly low, with only 62 calories per 1/2-cup (170-gram) serving. What makes peas unique from other vegetables is their high protein content, for example, a 1/2 cup (170 grams) of cooked carrots has only 1 gram of protein, while 1/2 cup (170 grams) of peas contains four times that amount.

I always loved the green peas and is so spring for me eating them 😊

I like them steamed or also simmer them in a saucepan with finely chopped onion, carrots and tomatoes sauce.

Begin by heating olive oil over medium-high heat and toss in a chopped onion and carrot. Add the peas, tomatoes sauce and a little bit of water. Stir them around, still over medium-high heat, until they’re heated through and tender, about 8-10 minutes. Add salt and pepper and fresh parsley if you like.

In the meantime, I have prepared also some ham and cheese rolls and dinner was ready.

Easy, delicious and nutritious 😋
