A little change in the routine – Eating out in Singapore

Hello my dear readers,

If you are one of my usual readers you will know by now that Saturday is the recipe day, but today is different.

I’m not in the mood of cooking nowadays…actually to be honest I cook every day but I don’t have time or will to make any photos of my dishes.

We eat as per normal, a little bit of everything, I prepare the mix salad for lunch everyday and I cook dinner every day but I’m really not in the mood to prepare the dishes for the photoshoot.

The downside of living in a city state like Singapore is that in this situation like Coronavirus, with the airport closed, the only place where we can travel is around the city.

For us that we’re very used to travel, especially my husband that was used to have at least one trip per month, some months even 3-4, is quite difficult to suddenly stop, being able to travel only 4-5 km around the city.

In order to change something, to get out of the usual routine work-home, and to not go crazy, we try to enjoy as much as we can the city and eating out.

Last weekend we’ve enjoyed a good Mediterranean Turkish cuisine in a little but cozy restaurant located in Holland Village in Singapore, just a few subway stops away from our place.

The restaurant is called The Mediterranean Deli Turk, where chef Ahmet is preparing and serving super delicious Turkish dishes.

I’m a very big lover of eggplant salad so I had grilled mashed eggplants with stewed beef called in Turkish Hunkar Begendi.

I even cannot describe how delicious it was. Those mashed eggplants were very cheese and the beef stew it was simply melting in my mouth.

I’m not a big fan of lamb, actually I never eat it, but my husband likes it very much so he tried the rack of lamb or Kuzu Pirzola. Honestly it looked too good to not try it so I had a little taste, it was so moist, grilled to perfection and it did not had any “strange smell or taste of lamb” how I call it.

And of course, one cannot go into a Turkish restaurant without trying the Baklava, a Turkish phyllo pastry sweet with honey and dried walnuts topped with pistachios.

Honestly, even if I’m a foodie, I like to eat and try new cuisines, but when eating out, I’m very shy in taking the pictures 🤪 I don’t know why but this is me, so please excuse my poor quality photos.

But I hope it gives you some ideas of what you can eat if you are in the mood of trying something new 😉

I like this little change in our routine. If you are bored, if you are like us, stuck in a city state without being able to travel, try to change something in your routine, it will help you not go crazy 🤪

I like to enjoy these small things 😉

Have a wonderful weekend!

  1. “poor quality photos” ? – you must be joking. Even though you couldn’t present them as you do at home, they are very good. I fully understand your not being in the mood to photograph your usual marvellous arrangements – and a bit of variety is always attractive. I’m pleased you enjoyed your meal out.

    1. Thank you very much Derrick! Very appreciated, especially when it comes from a super photographer like you 😉
Yes, a bit of variety is always welcomed 😉
      Have a lovely weekend 😉🌸

  2. Do you go to the Hawker centers (spelling?) in Singapore? We went there every day when we visited Singapore.

That food looks so good! Singapore is known for their yummy cuisine. Have you had freshly squeezed sugar cane juice? Highly recommend this drink! 😋

    1. In my first year I used to go but now only rarely…usually I cook at home, otherwise I prefer the restaurants 🤪 a little bit too much rice and noodles into the hawker centers and very little fresh veggies 🤪 But yes, can find any cuisine you want in Singapore and that’s great 😉
Yes, the freshly squeezed sugar cane juice is very popular and I do like also the watermelon juice 😉

  3. in this time frame, wherever you are in the world there are challenges…my region and city, Auckland in New Zealand, went back to Level 3 a couple of weeks ago and that meant that all in-house food and drink “sit down and eat” promptly shut up shop, again. If the business could do curbside, click/collect, delivery then they could serve someone…but you couldn’t just sit down and eat at a table, out or inside.

Our borders (roads leading elsewhere, rest of NZ in Level 2) closed and no one could leave & no one in their right mind come in! And no one wanted too , we do have a wider area to be within but we weren’t really allowed to leave our local ‘hoods. Mine is quite large but it’s boring retail and residential streets – no beach or nice leafy woodland nearby. We return to Level 2 this Sunday night…with eateries able to provide some in-house service with rules…

But I’ve gone the other way as such from you, I’ve relearned the skill named “cooking” and although my meals don’t look a chef prepared them, I love having this time to upgrade. Or course, half the time, the recipe ingredients are “NOT” be found in my cupboards but that makes me more creative…

    1. At least one good thing from this Covid situation is that made us rediscover some of our skills or made us learn new ones 😉
That’s the beauty of cooking I think, not having the ingredients and improvise the recipes 😉 We can have wonderful surprises, otherwise can at least have fun in the kitchen 😉
I hope one day I’ll be able to visit NZ…we were planning for next year to go and see America’s cup ⛵️ Hopefully the situation will be better until then and will allow us to travel 🧳
Be creative and stay safe 😊

      1. I read that the American entry for the America’s cup arrived on one of the biggest planes that has landed in Auckland – arrived with the yacht. They didn’t show the yacht but they showed the jet landing…

  4. Good pictures Ribana, it’s not poor quality. I love the dishes you have shared, and even though I cannot eat that much of all this, I would take my family who can actually eat as a single person. So that I can taste these a bit 😁 And pastry sweets are looking amazing 😍😍. And what you did is something good, if your friends have restaurants to visit theirs too, in this pandemic, these people has badly affected, we should help them visit occasionally and help them resume back their business. 💐 And yes, we can’t do it often, but a rare visit won’t hurt too 😇 Have a wonderful Sunday ✨💐

    1. Thank you very much Simon! Oh yes, the portions were huge indeed 🤪
Yes, unfortunately restaurants were badly affected by the Covid situation and we’re trying to support them as much as we can 😉
Have a wonderful week Simon 🤗😊

  5. Wow i miss singapore 🙂 it’s a small city but very clean and developed. The food you ordered looks soo yummy! I also don’t like lamb but the way it looks is soo tempting.

  6. I love the vibrancy of Singapore – it always seems so colourful. I know not everywhere is like that – but the one thing l do so miss of my times in Malaysia are the colours. Good post Ribana.

  7. Oh, I’m losing track of days lately, so even if I regularly read you post I still haven’t register it in mind that Saturday was recipes day 😄
I miss eating out too! And I travelled a lot too, going on road trips for 3 or more days. This lockdown is making me feel like a bird without wings (oh must make a poem or story out of that 😂)
We’re the opposite. When eating out I shamelessly take picture of food. If I’m left alone it might get cold before I start. Like you I love trying new dishes 😉 but you know that already 😀
Have a wonderful weekend dear Ribby! 🤗

    1. Hahaha…no problem dear Jess! 😉
Oh yes, this virus situation it really makes us like birds without wings 🐦 You should make a poem as your really good at words 😉😊
I guess I’m shy taking food pictures outside as I don’t like people looking at me 🤪
Is always nice to have different food experiences 😋😉
Hope you had a lovely weekend dear Jess! Wish you a wonderful week ahead! 🤩🤗
