Our first panettone this year

Hello my dear readers,

This year we are going back home so no Christmas cooking and baking, just eating πŸ˜‰

But of course, since is panettone season, I couldn’t resist until we go back home, so I have bought one πŸ˜‰ This is our first panettone this year.

Panettone Chiostro di Saronno Gin & Lemon, originating from Milan, is a fluffy sweet bread loaf with raisins and candied lemon peels and filled with gin pastry cream. Heaven! Especially if you are a gin lover, as I am πŸ˜‰

Panettone is usually enjoyed during Christmas and New Year in Italy and is made during a long process that involves curing of the dough with the proofing process alone taking several days, giving the cake its distinctive fluffy characteristics.

It is served in slices, vertically cut, accompanied with sweet hot beverages or a sweet wine.

Legends are saying that at the end of the fourteenth century, a pastry maker from the court of Visconti wanted to bake a cake for his sweetheart, but during the preparation, something went wrong and the dough rose out of all proportion and in this manner panettone was born.

For me, I think he did very well, as I love panettone πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‹

Do you like panettone? With so many options out there, which one is your favourite?

Wish you a Happy Merry Christmas in advance πŸ˜‰πŸŽ„

  1. Wow, so according to legends, it was coming from love… definitely a sweet bread πŸ™‚ So, Ribana, are you planning to make one for your sweetheart?

      1. Side story: I was grocery shopping last week and came across a very elaborate display of panettone’s. There were several different brands and varieties stacked on shelves and in aisles at a store that is known for quality goods. So, I’m checking everything out, thinking I should probably pick up one because it’s what one does every Christmas. I go through everything from the simplest in a plain plastic wrapper about $7, and work my way across the nicer paper wrapped and boxed brands where prices climbed higher into nearly $20. Further across, they become more elaborate $30, $40 then $50 for a Dolce & Gabbana branded container. And another that topped out at $95. I left empty handed 😊

      2. Dolce & Gabbana branded panettone? Really? $95 is a very exaggerated price! It is true that the artisanal ones are more expensive than the usual commercial ones but not $95…Chiostro dΓ¬ Saronno which is a very good artisanal panettone here in Singapore I paid it $35…otherwise the more commercial ones like Tre Marie, Bonifanti, Bauli, is around $20…$7 I think is pretty cheap so I doubt is real panettone…my suggestion is always to look for the ones made in Italy, since is a traditional Italian sweet πŸ˜‰

  2. I always see these boxes of cakes show up at grocery stores during the holiday season! I’ve never tried one but am so curious how they would taste now. Gin & lemon? Count me in!

    1. Are typical Italian deserts for Christmas! Try one but avoid the really β€œcommercial” ones and go for more artisanal ones made in Italy! Super delicious πŸ˜‹ Merry Christmas πŸŽ„πŸŽ

      1. Oh okay! If I ever buy one, will make sure it says “Made in Italy”, thank you for letting me know! πŸŽ„β€
