Mykonos is an island in the Cyclades group in the Aegean Sea famous for its pristine beaches and great nightlife and it is among the most popular Greek islands.
And as many Greek islands, also Mykonos town is characterised by the white houses, blue doors and windows and colourful bougainvilleas.

Beside its well known beaches for their bars and dance clubs that attract world-renowned DJs and typically stay open well past dawn, Mykonos offers gourmet food, cultural activities, and romantic holidays.  It’s a great destination for solo travellers, couples, and families with many things to see and do.

For example discovering the Windmills in Chora.
The windmills along with Little Venice are one of the most famous Mykonos attractions. With the help of the high winds that blow on the island, for many centuries the mills used to refine grain but with the progress of technology, the use of the mills declined, and now the ones that survived are used as private homes or museums, only seven of them being preserved. The most famous ones are the Kato Myloi (Lower Windmills) that stand on a hill facing the sea, imagine the view from up there.

Little Venice is a neighbourhood with colourful houses built on the edge of the sea and due to its resemblance with Venice, was named Little Venice. Nowadays the houses have been turned into elegant bars and restaurants that make you feel like in Italy and are among the best places in town to watch the sunset while sipping a cocktail or a prosecco. Cheers🥂

You may take a boat trip to the archeological site of Delos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, considered one of the most important Archaeological Sites in Greece. According to Mythology, it was the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. The island is now uninhabited, but you can visit it by taking one of the many ships that depart daily from Mykonos old harbour. A visit to the island of Delos is among the best things to do in Mykonos.

You may discover and enjoy Mykonos also by bike as there are plenty of tours around the island offering also wine tasting accompanied by traditional Mykonian products like different kind of cheeses, hams and the well known Greek salad.

If you are just looking for a relaxing holiday by the sea, the beaches of Mykonos are famous for their golden sand and crystal clear waters.

The best way to reach the island is by air as there are many flights from Athens and Thessaloniki to Mykonos and the flight trip from Athens to Mykonos is about 30 minutes. During the summer months, many airlines have also direct flights to Mykonos from many European cities.

Or you may take a boat from Athens’s two major ports Piraeus and Rafina. There are daily ferries going to the island and the trip lasts about 3 hours if you take the high-speed ferry and 5 hours if you take regular one.

Mykonos has a Mediterranean climate, with mild and rainy winters and warm and sunny summers.
The island is windy, and for this reason it’s cooler in summer than other islands of Greece. Rainfall follows the Mediterranean pattern, in fact it is concentrated from October to March and is not abundant.
Peak season is July and August and can be quite crowded. If you prefer avoiding the big crowds, the best time to visit Mykonos island is between May to June and September.
The water can be a little bit chilly but the weather is perfect.

It is quite difficult to find budget friendly accommodation in Mykonos but the prices can be more accessible in low season.

It looks like a paradise destination! 🙂

  2. Hi Rebina,
Thank you so much for sharing this Greek experience. I have never visited Mykonos but remember once receiving a post card from a guy I once met on holiday quite a while after we stopped communicating between England & Ireland.
1979 accompanied my brother on an inter rail European holiday & remember eating the best meal ever in Athens after travelling on the Balkan express from Vienna to Athens. We visited Ipsos in Corfu. I really loved Greece & it’s people.
Idea for another Greek holiday ??

  6. Great report. I visited in September 2017. The weather was terrific as you stated. Also not so many tourists. It was easy to walk around through the very narrow streets in the shopping areas.

  9. We were fortunate enough to see Mykonos as a part of a Viking ocean cruise of the Mediterranean. I loved this pretty island with its white buildings and narrow streets. A couple of bakeries offered treats worthy of bringing back home. Your photos are lovely — we had an overcast day and a hurried walk with a tour group, but my pics remind me of a great day anyway.
